We don’t recommend following fashion trends. In fact, we pride ourselves on doing the exact opposite. But if you’re looking to inject a little freshness into your wardrobe or want to add some colour to your everyday essentials, it’s worth keeping an eye on what’s going on in the often confusing world of clothing.
This isn’t a list of one-off, flash-in-the-pan trends. Instead, we decided to focus on future classics that happen to be getting some attention right now. These are trending pieces we’d wear ourselves – they’re easy to incorporate into your existing wardrobe and will remain stylish for years to come.
Key autumn/winter trends:
1. Leather
Leather is going to continue to be a trend for the winter months, thanks to its beautiful appearance, durability and timelessness. A cropped leather jacket is probably one of the smartest fashion investments you could ever make. It won’t be cheap, but it will last a lifetime.
2. Sweatpants
Sweatpants made their way from gym wear to casual wear a few years ago with the rise of athleisure. But if the autumn/winter catwalks are anything to go by, they’ve once again taken a new step and become an essential part of everyday clothing.
Let’s be honest, if there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past few years, it’s that elastic waistbands are one of the greatest inventions ever. Some brands know this, and almost all of their models are wearing sweatpants, paired with blazers and coats, as well as more casual pieces like bomber jackets.
3. All-Denim
Denim is one of the best fabrics ever. It’s durable, rich in texture, and will most likely be a large part of your existing wardrobe, whether it’s jeans, shirts, or jackets. Despite this, we don’t usually recommend wearing an all-denim outfit. That is until we see the fall and winter runways.
4. Parka
This year, the parka may be our top choice. Whether it’s a modern fishtail style or something more suitable for arctic adventures, parkas are bold and can be paired with almost anything. They can be worn with a casual suit, contrasting the clean lines of the blazer, or with casual wear.
For a street-style look, try pairing a black technical parka with sweatpants, a hoodie, and the sneakers of your choice.
5. Technical Jackets
The rise of functional outerwear in fashion has been one of the dominant trends of the past few seasons and will continue into the new year. This time around, cropped, zip-up silhouettes are in the spotlight – handy for wearing to the shops, or as a mid-layer under a winter coat to add compression and protect yourself from the elements.
